My life has not turned out like I thought it would...

In 2000, as my life was humming along probably a lot like yours, the unthinkable happened. With four fantastic children, and eventually eight amazing grandchildren, I was divorced after 33 years of marriage. My then-husband had been involved with another woman, and for more than three years would not end that relationship. So, after much sobbing, yelling, pleading and praying, I filed for divorce. I was devastated on so many levels; I can’t even describe them all. I thought I would never really be happy again.

After clawing my way through the grief of it all, I decided to use what I had learned to help make the journey easier for other women faced with this life-changing ordeal. I started a support group called R.A.D.I.C.A.L. Women. R.A.D.I.C.A.L. is an acronym for Rising Above Divorce In Confidence And Love. What we learned in that group led to a book entitled Radical Recovery:Transforming the Despair of Your Divorce Into An Unexpected Good and a companion Radical Recovery Workbook, both published by Leafwood Publishers and released in 2007. Now I am speaking around the country, starting R.A.D.I.C.A.L Women Support Groups, training leaders and hosting Midlife Divorce Recovery Boot Camps, the website and a blog all to help women survive and create a new fulfilling life for themselves after divorce.

Although this mission is not what I planned, not what I expected, and definitely not what I wanted at the time, it is bringing rewards in my life that I cannot even describe. I get e-mails from all over the country and from more than 60 foreign countries. I get messages that say, “I believe your book really saved my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you.” Or “Finding your website was a Godsend!!!” Or "Your mentoring gave me hope again and started me on the road to rebuilding my life better than before."

For as long as I am able, I am going to commit myself to this endeavor. It has become that famous “passion” that people long for in their work. And when I hear a television or radio announcer or a program director announce me as Suzy Brown, midlife divorce recovery expert, I gladly step up and do everything I can to help.

P.S. The RADICAL Women each choose a stage name for security purposes. Your first name is the name of your first pet. Your last name is the name of the street where you lived in elementary school. My name is FriskyRidgewood. I love that name! Figure out your own stage name for this new stage in life.
